My journey of becoming an artist - Michele Schubert
Art has always been a huge part of my life, as a child I loved drawing and did a whole lot of it. It decreased during my teenage years, but even then I still loved to draw and paint. The two mediums I enjoy working with the most are ink and watercolor. When I'm rather busy I tend to mainly work with ink. But I really love it when I have the time to sit down and work with watercolor!
I never thought pursuing art as a career was a realistic option: I always knew that it's very hard to make a living out of it. So I followed one of my other passions: "HUMANS!" I started studying psychology and during my study, art was a great way to relax, calm down, and meditate. One day, a friend of mine told me about Inktober and I really loved the concept. In October 2017 I started my Instagram channel, participated in Inktober, and shared what I came up with! I did it in the quiet and told almost nobody about it. On one hand, I was kind of "ashamed" - sharing my art felt so intimate and personal, but on the other hand, I wanted to get honest feedback.
My family and friends are wonderful supporters in my life, but hearing feedback from strangers felt more reliable. And this way I discovered a wonderful art community. I really enjoy being part of this community and I met wonderful people that way.
One event that meant the world to me was when a high school student asked me if they could make a presentation about my art in their art class! It was an assignment to pick an artist they liked and talk about them. I felt very honored by that and it touched my heart that one person liked my art enough to tell other people about it. Events like that really make me happy. It means so much to me when people take the time to write to me about how my drawings make them feel or what they think about them.
Today, art is still a way for me to calm down and connect with myself. Today I still don't make a living from art (and even if I did, I'd probably still pursue my psychology career). But every time a person contacts me to buy an original or a print, I feel so much joy because this one person likes my art enough to hang it up in their room and I feel very honored by that :) I'm excited to see where my art journey will go and I'm sure it will take some unexpected turns.
