This is a very high quality book, the binding is excellent, it lays flat perfectly. The hardboard of the cover feels strong and sturdy and I love the pocket on the back, however I did purchase the wrong book, I thought I was purchasing the watercolor book, and this one is just for sketching. The description does say the word "painting", and while I suppose that is true based on the fact that the paper is thick enough to hold watercolor without disentegrating, it also has some sort of coating on it that causes the paint to dry almost *instantly* upon contact with the paper. So it's not just that you can't do washes, but you can't even paint lines without rough edges unless you want to babysit every stroke with infinite care. It is MUCH better as a sketchbook :) For use with a pencil, it gets super high marks!
